One of the most difficult things to do when you want to lose weight is getting started. It’s because to lose weight, you have to be willing to change some things in your lifestyle… at least for a period of time. And those “things” are usually not in your current comfort zone.

It is the changes you have to make to lose weight that often become the obstacles that prevent your success.

This is why you need a carefully thought-out plan that addresses ALL the necessary components to lose the right kind of weight (fat, not muscle) in the shortest time possible. And the most important of these is MOMENTUM.

Momentum. It’s the kingpin when it comes to losing weight faster than the dreaded “1 lb.-a-week” approach that is so typical in most weight loss plans. You are either stationary, gaining momentum, or losing momentum.

In Physics, Momentum is (P = M x V) or Momentum = Mass x Velocity. In weight loss, Momentum can best be described as Personal Effort x Consistency. That is… Personal Effort applied Consistently = MASSIVE Momentum. It is this momentum that provides the basis of our new Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start Program. This is why this new accelerated weight loss program is divided into two phases as seen in the following image – all designed to create MOMENTUM and make your weight loss process easier and faster! The “movement” you feel as you spring out of your usual eating habits and exercising (or lack of it) is your MOMENTUM starting to be created. It is the internal force that will propel you to greater weight loss… so long as you continue to apply Consistent And Never-ending Improvement or CANI.

CANI is a “momentum principle” I always recommend to all clients that I coach and I will be using it in our new upcoming Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start Program as well. It’s designed to encourage you to make small but highly effective incremental improvements each day… and in doing so, it forces you to go beyond your current set of limitations or personal barriers.

If all you do is improve one tiny aspect of your eating and exercise plan every single day, you will achieve mastery of your body, your metabolism, and your weight in uncommon time.

If you are struggling just to get started losing weight or having difficulty staying motivated once you seem to be seeing some results, I highly recommend you consider joining our new 10-week Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start Program that begins next week. Registration closes this Friday, August 27th, but there is still time to join the program with just 3 seats left… so don’t wait. Call me today and let me help you build your weight loss momentum and achieve the slimmer and healthier body you deserve!

Until next time…

The new Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start Program is my aggressive response to making things right when it comes to starting and continuing on the right path to effective weight loss. Rich Farina and I have prepared perhaps the most detailed and comprehensive 10-week program available anywhere in the area, bringing an intense focus and detailed guidance to implementing the Genesis Exercise and Nutrition principles specifically for weight loss.

The Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start Program is a coordinated “package” of all three pillars that are necessary to launch your metabolism into fat-burning ”hyper-speed”: metabolic resistance training (MRT), “after-burn” cardio exercise, and a nutrition plan that is designed to get your body to “purge” the excess body fat you are currently wearing. You can read more about what’s included in the Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start Program HERE.

I’m aware of the hype and gimmicks out there pertaining to weight loss, and am sensitive to our loyal, discriminating, and highly sophisticated clients. If you’re comfortable with your weight and body composition and joined the ”Genesis lifestyle” just for the exercise, you may not require this intensive fat-loss program and investment. However, we’ve received tremendous demand and interest for further support beyond our advanced exercise program at Genesis relating to weight management, and in particular, fat loss. All of us involved are extremely excited to present this new program to you.

Take a close look and consider whether now is the time to take “The Jump” Start and get a handle on your weight management issue once and for all. Your 10-week “course” will require a focused commitment of time and energy, but it is not at all overly-stressful or overly-complex. The Genesis Weight Loss Jump Start journey can be fun, convenient and realistic, regardless of your fitness level or body composition starting point.

I don’t care if you have “fat” genes or tons of hang ups from repeated weight loss failures. This program will be a “breath of fresh air” when you discover how simple and enjoyable the process of weight loss and lifestyle transformation can be. My staff and I will be with you every step of the way. If any problems or challenges come up, you can avoid feeling discouraged or frustrated by taking advantage of our expert support.

If you have any questions about our new upcoming program, please feel free to call me at 215-504-0100 or email me at Rita@GenesisPersonalFitness.com .

By now, you’ve probably seen the pictures of Drew Carey all over the ‘net – he has lost over 80 pounds since January. He looks great, and he has firmly committed to keeping it off.

How did he do it?

His key (and yours, and mine) was and is good old fashioned exercise and a brand new menu.

His new regimen is quite strict – in addition to the “no donuts” rule he made for himself (good call there), he has taken a huge step to lower his carbs to a maximum of 50-75 grams/day, a fat loss “sweet spot” for many who are looking to make a visible change in how they look quickly!

In addition to changing his diet, he has committed to exercise as well, and hits the gym 5-6 times per week for 30-60 minutes each session, depending on whether he lifts weights or not. (Sounds like Genesis, doesn’t it?)

But it was probably plastic surgery, or some miracle pill, right?

We read those rumors earlier this year, too. We had heard that thanks to his connections in Hollywood, he was taking a custom made nutritional supplement to curb his appetite. (Do we smell a cheater?!)

Now we are reading that this is not true, and Carey himself insists it is not true either.

He reported to People Magazine: “There’s nobody really standing over me. I do work with somebody who gives me advice on what to do, how many minutes to exercise, what my heart rate should be and all that kind of stuff.”

Straight from the horse’s mouth! (Or should it be “pony” considering he has lost so much weight?)

The Best Part

Thanks to Drew’s new healthier lifestyle, he has actually been able to get rid of his diabetes!

He was a Type-2 diabetic, and thanks to losing weight and becoming healthier, Carey reveals he is no longer considered diabetic and has been given the medical OK to stop taking medication!

Visible Evidence

Carey continues to encourage himself – when he saw how his determination paid off, now wearing a 33 inch waist pant (down from a 44 inch waist), he became more determined to lose even more weight and regain his health:

“I like being skinny,” says Carey. “I was sick of being fat on the camera. Really, I just got sick of it.”

If the Price is Right host, who seemingly has every short cut method to losing weight just sitting there at his fingertips, instead chooses the old fashioned way of eating right and working out, is there any excuse left for you?

Pills Don’t Work

If you’ve tried to lose weight before, you know that popping pills does not help. Yes, you may lose weight, but you do gain it back – and usually you gain even more than you lost!

Committing to a decent meal plan and moderate exercise (Genesis again!) is really the only tried and true way to take weight off and keep it off. You’ve got to have that desire, like Drew did, to want to change your lifestyle. Again… you have to want to make the change FIRST!

It looks like Drew made a change in the way he thinks about himself in order to make his incredible transformation; hopefully he keeps it up.

Until next time…

Rita Bryan

When you join Genesis Personal Fitness, you get introduced to the Genesis Fitness “Blueprint” (GFB) - quite an advanced fitness strategy that helps you rebuild and maintain your muscle, reduce your body fat, increase your energy, improve your strength, agility and power-to-weight ratio, reduce your risk of getting injured, improve insulin sensitivity, and boost immune function.
And if that’s not enough, [...]

And if that’s not enough, a major side effect is that if you also work on your diet, you can start turning back the clock and once again look like you did when you were a decade or two younger. We refer to this as LBN – which stands for “looking better naked” because let’s be honest… it may have been that look in the mirror that finally got you to pick up the phone and call Genesis in the first place.

I often hear clients talk about how they explain what they do at Genesis to their friends, co-workers, and family members. It’s interesting when I hear them try to describe the “exercise magic” that they engage in that begins the process of helping them achieve new health and fitness behaviors in the hope of readying their bodies for the decades ahead.

The reality is… there is a “magic formula” in which the Genesis Fitness Blueprint (GFB) is built around that draws from the most recent work done in modern exercise physiology to arrive at the perfect exercise prescription for maximizing fitness with the least amount of time and without suffering.

The “Magic” Of Natural Movement Training

GFB Exercise Sessions are based on something we call Natural Movement Training that results in a phenomenon called ”functional fitness”. The advanced training machines we use at Genesis allow us to take simple, full-body movements from everyday life and add intensity, rotation, and stabilization, thereby creating efficient exercises that help improve the performance of real world activities.

The science supporting this strategy is irrefutable. Today, all of us are in need of achieving and maintaining a level of overall fitness that will keep us active, lean, and strong – abilities that are essential for truly enjoying life, staying active, and looking good as we get older.

The GFB promotes strong functional muscles. And strength is not how much you can lift on the Chest Press machine, or how many plates you can stack on the Leg Extension machine; real strength is revealed by real results. Could you fully stroke to shore against a rip tide if you got caught in one? Carry your wife or husband from a burning house? Quickly push a child out of the way of an oncoming car? Would you embarrass yourself (or pull something unmentionable) on the tennis court or softball field if you were called upon to suddenly “get that ball”?

Not Hours And Hours In The Gym

Exercise doesn’t have to be torturous and drawn out; in fact, it’s far more effective to “train” as hard as you can for half an hour using strengthening movements that incorporate as many muscles in combination as possible than exercising for two or more hours just to burn a few hundred calories.

The GFB keeps things short and to the point. Strength training sessions are intentionally designed to run no longer than 30 minutes, followed by tightly focused cardio training events that often don’t go beyond 20 minutes at the higher levels of intensity. Simply put… the GFB is personal fitness distilled into its most effective, functional essence.

How Fit Should You Be?

Fitness is defined differently for each client who comes to Genesis Personal Fitness. For some, it’s enough to be able to handle their daily chores and still have energy at the end of the day; maybe carry groceries up two flights of stairs easily or lug bags their through an airport without hurting their shoulders. For others, it’s being able to run a 5K or complete a 100 mile bike ride. And the spectrum is vast with everything in between.

Better yet, as legendary strongman Earle Liederman once wrote in the 1920’s, there are 5 benchmarks that any man (or woman) possessing adequate fitness should be able to do (Remember, this was written in the 1902’s so consider that we may have to make some modifications in Mr. Liederman’s quoted statement and benchmarks):

“Every man (and woman) should be able to save his own life. He/She should be able to swim far enough, run fast and long enough to save his/her life in case of emergency and necessity. He/She also should be able to chin him/herself a reasonable number of times, as well as to do a dip between two bars a number of times, and he/she should be able to jump a reasonable height and distance.”

I would add that anyone should be fit enough to take on a new fun activity without fearing an injury. In fact, true fitness can best be defined by the acquiring of a variety of strengths and skills, a combination of speed, power, agility, endurance balance, and coordination… all the while enjoying excellent health. Fitness is no longer simply a snapshot measure of how much weight you can lose or how much weight you can lift or how fast you can run a mini-marathon. True fitness is more a question of how well you “function” in most areas of your physical life… while looking fabulous in your skin!

Until next time…

Like it or not, we are an accumulation of our habits. From how you get out of bed, how you shower, how you dress, how you walk, sit, and talk, how you respond to the world, how you act in front of others, and how you think; you’re living out the habits you’ve consciously or unconsciously formed over months, years, and even decades.

But the good news is that habits are necessary.

Good habits free up your mind so you can concentrate on how to survive day to day. You don’t have to think about how to drive your car so you can be on the lookout for danger while you are driving. You don’t have to think about how to walk so you can concentrate on where you’re going.

Unfortunately, habits can also keep you locked in self-destructive patterns, which will limit your success, particularly when it comes to losing weight.

Have you been unsuccessful at losing weight because you know it’s going to require you to change some things? While you probably know “what” your going to have to change to accomplish this, part of your game plan is that you’ll need to drop those bad habits that are keeping you in your comfort zone and develop new ones that are in alignment with the weight you want to lose. Let’s face it, people don’t suddenly lose weight simply because one morning they decide they “want to”… their habits (good and bad) play a large part in determining their outcome.

What are the habits you have that are keeping you from achieving your weight loss goals?

Really be honest with yourself here…

Are you a perpetual “Monday morning starter” just to find that by Wednesday or Thursday you find yourself eating things you swore you wouldn’t on Monday?

Do you schedule your times to exercise and then let other “things” take priority and end up skipping exercise on a day or so that week?

Do you decide that you’ve had enough trying to fit into your bigger pants or shorts, but then figure “Oh, what the hell… one more time won’t matter” when your friends come calling to eat and drink out at one of your favorite eateries?

Do you try to follow through on promises you make to yourself about losing those extra pounds and then find it difficult to stay motivated?

What prevents you from starting toward and sticking with a well-designed weight loss plan ISN’T good intentions… it’s the not-so-good habits and patterns that seem to almost force you to stay as overweight as you are like some of the software programs that run in the background of your computer without you even knowing it.

Now imagine what your body (and your life) would be like if all your habits were their productive counterparts!

What would your body look and feel like if you ate healthier, more balanced meals that didn’t pack on the pounds at least 80% of the time?

What would your body look and feel like if you made the commitment and stuck with it to schedule your exercise sessions AND make them a priority so as to NEVER skip or reschedule them, no matter what?

What would your body look and feel like if you did something else to be social with your friends than just eating and drinking high-fat, sugar-laden foods at a restaurant?

What would your body look and feel like if you stopped procrastinating about losing weight, overcame your immediate obstacles, and began losing the extra pounds with a coach who held you accountable?

Would your body… and your life… be different? I bet it would!

So, my suggested 2-Step Action Plan for you is…

STEP 1: Write down 5 productive habits you could adopt right now that you already know would make a change in how you look and start you on the road to being lighter. This might include things like deciding to stop eating junk and sugary drinks both at home and when you eat out, substitute the “white stuff” (potatoes, rice, bread, and pasta) for more vegetables or fruit during the week, making sure your drink enough mainly good, refreshing water (at least 96 oz.) each day, increasing your daily calorie burn by getting up a half hour earlier and taking a face-paced walk before breakfast at least 4 days a week in addition to what you do at Genesis, and perhaps get a buddy to do it with you.

STEP 2: Once you pick the 5 new habits you’re ready to adopt, then start with just one and create a “personal sequence” that will support your new habit. By this, I mean create the necessary “little” behaviors and the surroundings that will allow you to make your new habits EASY to get use to doing. The fact is we are “visual animals” in that we tend to follow along with things that are visually introduced and pleasing to us in our surroundings. Here are some ideas… Buy some new exercise clothing so you look and feel different and not like you’re use to looking and feeling; write your “first” weight loss goal (about 10 lbs.) down on a postcard that you keep with you and read 5 times a day; enlist the help of an “accountability partner” who has habits to change as well and work with each other; work with a personal weight loss coach who can keep you on track and insure you’re best chance for success.

It’s important to make a 100% commitment to each of your new habits, so be specific about the steps that you’re willing to take in order to drop an old habit and adopt a new one. Don’t be vague about how you will change your habits. Spell it out for yourself so you can recognize situations that motivate you to act out your new habit.

Just developing five new productive habits will dramatically shift your body to be more in line with your vision for it. And the more in line it becomes, the easier the other habits are to replace because your perspective is shifting and you can see more clearly how your old habits aren’t serving you and your body anymore.

Make the decision. Make the commitment. Then watch your new leaner, toned, and healthier body unfold!

Are you “stuck” in your weight loss? Do you feel like you keep trying, but are getting nowhere fast?

If you’re serious about making a change in your weight once and for all, there’s still time to join me in our upcoming Weight Loss Jump Start Program with a 2-week Registration beginning Monday August 16th. Over 8 weeks, you’ll lose weight, rebuild your fat-burning metabolism, and learn how to carry on your weight loss momentum until you reach your goals. Based on some of the most effective strategies we’ve used in both our Weight Loss Boot Camps and our EatingSmart Weight Loss Coaching Program, you’ll be changed from the inside out — emerging with a new weight loss mindset, new diet and exercise skills, a better fat-burning metabolism and a clear path of where you’re going…and how to get there.

The “short” answer: probably a lot longer than you want.

The long answer: As a professional health and diet coach, I tend to cover a lot of weight loss nutrition and diet issues, but fitness is a crucial factor in not only weight loss but in overall health as well. So I’m eager to discuss exercise issues in greater detail. Truth is I spend a fair amount of time coaching, speaking and writing about how to integrate exercise with diet for faster, more effective fat loss and subesquent easier weight management once you reach your goal.

Exercise is a vital component of not just weight loss and weight management, but stress relief, energy, sleep, aging, disease prevention, bone health, and on and on it goes…but it’s easy to focus on the nutrition and diet issues and forget that we have to move our lazy buns on a regular, consistent basis. Leaving exercise out of the weight loss equation is far more destructive to your health than any number of diet “sins” you might commit. Notwithstanding the fact that I believe our standard American diet is largely responsible for most of our health problems and most common causes of death, the importance of exercise cannot be overstated.

Most people don’t exercise on a regular basis for many reasons… or should I say “excuses”.

Eating is not a habit, but a necessity. After all, no one really forgets to eat for very long. And it’s usually rather enjoyable to change food selections and to modify our diets for the better, for we get immediate psychological rewards: control, accomplishment, tangibility.

Exercise is also a necessity, but it’s no longer integral to our daily lives like eating is. Let’s face it, few people are out plowing an acre of sod nowadays, so exercise can feel more like a ”chore”. No one likes a chore, and establishing a chore as an ingrained habit is tough. Life’s rewards require elbow grease, and unfortunately that will never change. If exercise were easy or yielded quick results, I promise you that everyone would be doing it. Exercise is certainly worth the effort, and not in spite of the challenge, but because it is “a challenge”. The long-term health rewards of exercise – outside of the brief blast of endorphins following your workout – are not always initially apparent and certainly not immediate.

And if you don’t view exercise as an unpleasant chore, then perhaps you join the community that view it as a means to an end: getting a leaner, shapelier or sexier body. Those fitness infomercials feature men and women with six-pack abs and celebrities like Christie Brinkley for a reason – deep down, most people want to look like that. But the reality is that even the fittest folks are not necessarily going to end up looking “like that”. You can only maximize what you’ve got. I believe that we have to stop thinking of exercise as a vanity tool and remember that it’s simply a basic necessity of life. This doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be excited about using exercise to lose fat and weight if you hope to shed some extra pounds. But we fall off the proverbial treadmill over and over again because we’re getting on it for the wrong reasons in the first place – exercise is about far more than weight loss.

So, how long before you see results?

You really can’t fight your genes. I witnessed one woman I coach become sleek and toned after just 3 months in our Genesis Weight Loss Boot Camp. Another guy I work with exercises day in and day out, both at Genesis and on his own, and has for two years now; although he’s fit and lean, he will never look like Matthew McConaughey no matter how hard he tries. (It’s worth noting that if you start your children on a regular exercise program from an early age, they’ll develop muscles that will stay with them for a lifetime, even if they gain a little weight down the road as we all tend to do.)

But there is some justice: the longer you exercise, the easier it will be to make changes to your body composition and your shape. That said, results are different for everyone. It’s a complex equation of existing muscles, your natural build, your metabolism, the way you distribute fat on your body and many other factors. You actually do get an immediate health boost from exercise, but let’s be honest: how many are really after that? As a national average, although not here at Genesis, most folks give up on exercise after just a few weeks or even a few days because we don’t see the immediate desired physical results. The fact is, even if you’re a Genesis client participating in both our exercise program AND our weight loss nutrition coaching program, you’re going to have to put in a few “serious” months before seeing any real improvement.

The point is, if you’re asking that question – how long before I see results – the answer is almost always: much longer than you want. Hang in there though; changes in weight, body composition, leanness, and shape will happen faster and easier under our guidance at Genesis than anywhere else. We all want to look good, and many of us want or need to lose weight (excess body fat). Those are healthy and admirable goals. But while exercise can and does help with these goals, at the end of the day, we’ve got to realign our thinking and remember that exercise, more than anything, is a necessity for health, and despite what the marketers would have us feel, that’s the real reason you should be doing it.

Please share your thoughts on this, your challenges, and your successes, with me here. I’d love to hear your perspective.

Until next week…

Now in remission for over 13 years, I always stay vigilant and use all the resources I can to take charge of my health. In fact, many of very principles under which you exercise today at Genesis were part of the foundation I worked under to re-capture my health and my life.

Just recently, I came across a significant piece of research which matters a lot to me… and should matter to you if you are over 35 years old.

It’s something that up until now, I suspected but could never find the research to support my hunch. But at last, things are changing and A LOT is being figured out about this whole exercising and eating better lifestyle idea.

This is so important that I spent the time today to write an article for our main website explaining the type of exercise and how you must do it to cut your risk of cancer by half.

If you have any interest at all in seeing what we do at Genesis beyond weight loss and looking better, I invite you to go there now and read the article.

One of the hardest things for clients to overcome when they diet and are trying to lose weight is that they suffer from a condition known as “portion distortion”. Essentially, they think that if it isn’t “big” in size, then it probably doesn’t have too many calories. A number of clients I coach in weight loss are amazed to find out how many calories those “small things” are really costing them.

One of the concepts I teach is how to master “food swapping”, particularly when you eat out at a restaurant and fast-food drive-thru. When you “know” what to eat, it is easier to continue your weight loss momentum and have predictable weight (fat) loss each week.

To help clients get a handle on “food swapping” and how to eat the better meals so they can stay on their diet and not blow it completely, I recommend the “Eat This, Not That” books.

If you’ve never picked up one of the four books that are available under this title, you should. They are a quick read and an excellent resource to use and learn from, whether you cook and eat all your meals at home, or whether you frequent your favorite restaurants more than you should.

Let’s face it… whether you’re in the frozen food aisle, the fast-food drive-thru, the local Olive Garden, or even your own kitchen, you’re faced with dozens of food choices every single day. When you decide to venture off the eating plan we give you during your Weight Loss Coaching Program, you need to “know” which ones will help you look and feel fit and trim—and which are loaded with hidden calories, fats, and other nasty stuff, right?

Every week, I have the chance to meet and interview a number of perspective new clients who are looking to join our Genesis Personal Fitness “community”. It’s interesting what these people tell me as to “their why” they want to become a client at Genesis.

I would say that a vast majority I interview want to come to Genesis because they have weight to lose and have heard that Genesis is the place to get it done. They’re not exactly sure how it all works at Genesis - they just know that we have a “magic formula” for getting people to lose their excess fat in a relatively short period of time (in comparison to how long it took for them to gain it, that is).

But during the Consultation with me, I see that many of these people have several “ah-ha moments”, particularly when I explain how strength training can have so many other positive implications to not only how they look, but also how they feel and how long they last (live).

The good news is that many “get it” and if they fit into our private Genesis community in both potential and attitude, they become a welcomed addition to our exclusive Genesis family.

So, what about you? Yes, yes… I know you know how much our Genesis exercise and eating programs can help you get the slimmer, leaner body you want. BUT, what about the other “stuff”?

What about how our strength training approach can help you improve your heart? What about how it helps you improve and ward off diabetes? And then there’s the new research that points to how strength training can actually prevent you from getting cancer.

Well, just to expand the view of your “playing field” when it comes to the exercise you do when you come to Genesis, I’ve written a short article on all of this and placed it on our website for you to read. When you have a minute, click the link that follows and read it. If you have any comments about it, feel free to leave them here.

Hello everyone! I can’t believe summer is over and the fall is here. And with the new fall season under way, I have a few short but important announcements that as a Genesis client, you’ll want to know about.

A New Way Of Staying In Touch With You

Over this past summer, we’ve been getting a lesson in new online technology so we can have a more effective and consistent way of staying in touch with you.

Now using our new blog, we’ll be able to accomplish this. It also give YOU the opportunity to comment directly to us and give us your feedback through this technology.

Periodically throughout each month, we’ll send you an update on what’s going on at Genesis, as well as what’s the latest in diet, exercise, and weight loss around the globe. We plan to move into new, exciting ways of bringing you this information including video and audio.

I hope you’ll welcome our short email-to-blog contacts so you can stay “fresh” about all that is going and coming up here at Genesis Personal Fitness.

The Upcoming Genesis Weight Loss Challenge Is On!

It’s official! We will be holding our 2010 Genesis Weight Loss Challenge this January in which 20 lucky Genesis clients will get to compete to become our crowned “biggest loser”. Money, prizes, and a lot of weight loss will be at stake. Stay tuned for more details.

We’re Making Our Group Training More Personalized

In an effort to make our Group Training more effective and personalized, we’ve decided to reduce the number of clients our Genesis trainers are training at one time effective immediately.

If you’re accustomed to exercising at Genesis at a certain time, please remember to schedule your appointments one week in advance using our Express Schedulers.

Please avoid making last minute call-in or walk-in appointments because we will not be making any exceptions to this new appointment policy.

Follow Us On Facebook & Twitter Soon

Many of our clients have asked us to get involved in the great online social media phenomenon such as Facebook and Twitter so they can more easily tell their friends and family all about Genesis Personal Fitness.

Right now, as I write this, we are installing our social media pages and will let you know as soon as they are ready to access.

Thanks in advance for your help in spreading the word about Genesis. We always appreciate your referrals!
