One of the most challenging aspects of determining a client’s body composition (% body fat) is using a method that insures the most accurate measurement.  Over the years, we have tried several methods that promise accuracy, but each has its inherent flaws, particularly when you compare them to the “gold standard” of measuring body composition: hydrostatic or underwater weighing.

But in our efforts to always bring you the best in everything we offer, whether it be in exercise methods, diet and weight loss strategies, metabolism testing, or nutritional supplements we recommend, measuring your body composition (essentially the percentage of body fat) has now taken a giant leap into the future with the latest technology from IntelaMetrix.

Their new professional-level Ultrasound Body Composition Assessment System called the BodyMetrix uses ultrasound to measure the body fat and lean muscle of a person to a degree of accuracy that is the closest to the “gold standard”.  Used in hospitals and bariatric centers, the BodyMetrix Ultrasound Body Composition Assessment System uses non-invasive  ultrasound waves to penetrate tissue and detect the true fat thickness at certain measuring points. By making measurements at multiple points on the body, the most accurate of your body fat % can be determined.

They’re Coming… The Octane 3700s

Posted by: | Comments (0)

IT’S OFFICIAL… we will be replacing our current Stairmaster elliptical trainers with brand new Octane 3700 Pro Elliptical Cross Trainers.  If you’re unfamiliar with these state-of-the-art ellipticals, I thought you might be interested in a few features and benefits about them and even a short video.

Besides providing a superior upper and lower body cardio workout, they enable the user to select from a variety of new exercise routines that will work well with your New Leaf Metabolic Exercise Program.  In addition, the Octane 3700 Pro Elliptical Cross Trainers are capable of being set at two different stride lengths - one for walking/jogging (a shorter stride length) and one for running (a longer stride length).  What this means is that 4 of the 8 new Octane 3700 Pro Elliptical Cross Trainers will be set for one stride length and the remaining 4 the other stride length.  Each one will be clearly labeled as to which stride length it is set for (Walker/Jogger versus Runner), so be sure you check before you start to make sure it is right for you.

5 Ways To Cut Calories This Summer

Posted by: | Comments (0)

Even though the weather is warmer and people are more active overall, summer can pack on the extra pounds.  Vacations and trips can throw your diet completely out of wack and don’t forget the barbecues that triple your calorie and sodium intake in one meal.  So what can you do to prevent summer from taking its toll on your body?  Follow these five easy tips.

1. Keep the water coming.  Not only does the heat dehydrate you faster, but it also gives you the munchies.  Staying hydrated can help control your appetite and keep your metabolism burning all day long.

2. Hit the gym bright and early.  Early workouts will keep your from overheating and getting exhausted.  They will also give you the extra boost of energy you need to get your day going. m

3. Have a plan.  This rule will save you time, money, and calories.  If you are going to be out and about all day, pack a healthy lunch.  This applies to road trips and vacations as well.  You won’t waste the time and money it takes to find and eat at a restaurant and you will save all the calories and fat you would have been getting from a burger and fries.

Beating The Weight-Loss Plateau

Posted by: | Comments (0)
Unfortunately, it happens to everyone.  You’ve been doing a great job with your weight-loss, but suddenly you feel like you’ve hit a wall. The pounds you were dropping earlier now stubbornly refuse to budge. What’s happened?  You’ve reached a dieter’s plateau.
Weight-loss plateaus are very common. In fact, if you’re trying to lose weight, it’s pretty much guaranteed that you’ll reach this frustrating stage one or more times on your journey to reaching your ultimate “goal weight”.
It’s a natural consequence of the weight loss process that as you lose weight, you end up burning fewer calories. Does that mean you have to eat even less? Only if  you don’t keep doing the key things you learned in both exercise training and weight loss nutrition at Genesis.  For folks who are not Genesis clients, their resting metabolisms slows down because there is less of them to fuel AND they are likely not doing what they need to so they actually improve and sustain a higher fat-burning metabolism.
Don’t Panic And Go To Extremes
When Genesis clients hit a weight-loss plateau, sometimes they start doing things outside the proven Genesis Weight Loss “Formula”.  These often include cutting their daily calories, increasing the intensity of their cardio exercise outside the prescribed heart rate training zones, increasing the number of days they do cardio exercise, etc.
The fact of the matter is that when you hit a weight loss plateau and the weight scale seems not to be moving (or moving in the right direction), assuming that you are still adhering to ALL of the key weight loss principles in the “formula” that has worked for you at Genesis so far, it usually means one or both of the following things:
#1: You are at a transition point when your body is trading fat loss for improved muscle function as a result of being stronger…
AND/OR
#2: You are teetering on the edge of your metabolism going into “starvation mode”.
If you are presently trading fat loss for muscle restoration and improved function, the weight scale won’t tell you this.  The weight scale can’t see what’s going on inside of you.  You just have to trust that if you’re still adhering to the “formula” we’ve taught you, things are going in the right direction.  When will you know for sure what’s going on?  When you have your next Monthly Momentum Keepers Assessment.  Remember, that’s when we measure your “fat loss” versus your weight loss.  Until then, carefully monitor how your clothes are fitting – looser means you’re moving in the right direction regardless what the scale temporarily says.
On the other hand, it you are teetering on the edge of your metabolism going into “starvation mode”, it means you’re not doing something right.  Your brain is sensitive to keeping you alive.  So if you change something too quickly or radically in your eating patterns, meal design, water intake, daily calorie volume, or exercise training habits, you could be sending a signal to your brain that your “survival” is threatened and subsequently it will respond by shifting your metabolism into a conservation mode where it will hoard and store fat much like squirrels gather nuts for survival during the winter.
Increases in stress can also shift your body into “survival mode”.  Sudden changes in lifestyle (divorce, a change in residence, concentration on a health issue you’re trying to overcome, etc.) has been shown to cause increases in cortisol in the body, which is a fat-storing, metabolism-slowing hormone released when you are subjected to certain types of stress.
