keep-it-simpleJust about every week, I’m reading about how some “diet guru” has come up with a new diet program designed to help you lose weight.  And after I start reading more in depth, it seems that the author has taken some simple but effective weight loss concepts and made it into a “formula” that is usually more complicated than it has to be.

At Genesis, we actually do have a very effective weight loss formula, but the difference is that we have stuck to the philosophy:  The simplier, the better!

When I start coaching Genesis clients to help them lose weight, they are often surprised that they have to de-regulate their lives and make their approach to their weight loss diet “simple”.  And this is because over the 20 years I’ve been a weight loss coach, simple works the BEST!

Here’s two specific areas of our “formula” that we make losing weight simple for our Genesis clients:

DailyLog4aAs a life-long health advocate, as well as a weight loss coach and consultant, I have found no better predictor of who will be successful at reaching their fitness and weight loss goals than whether or not they are willing to keep a personal log of what exercise they do and what they eat.  If you want to see relentless progress and almost guaranteed success, write down what you eat and do… it is really that simple.

In the thousands of people I have coached to lose weight and keep it off, those who were willing to trust me on this and actually form the daily habit of keeping a daily log have always lost the weight they wanted to lose and keep it off.

The most difficult part of this is, of course, forming the habit of keeping a daily log. It is something we’re not use to.  While some of us formulate a plan of the things we “have to do”, few actually take the time to make it a habit on a daily basis, particularly when it comes to what we’re going to eat and what we did eat.

momentum-pic-cropped-200WOne of the most difficult things to do when you want to lose weight is getting started. It’s because to lose weight, you have to be willing to change some things in your lifestyle… at least for a period of time.  And those “things” are usually not in your current comfort zone.

It is the changes you have to make to lose weight that often become the obstacles that prevent your success.

This is why you need a carefully thought-out plan that addresses ALL the necessary components to lose the right kind of weight (fat, not muscle) in the shortest time possible.  And the most important of these is MOMENTUM.

Momentum. It’s the kingpin when it comes to losing weight faster than the dreaded “1 lb.-a-week” approach that is so typical in most weight loss plans.  You are either stationary, gaining momentum, or losing momentum.

Drew Carey200WBy now, you’ve probably seen the pictures of Drew Carey all over the ‘net – he has lost over 80 pounds since January. He looks great, and he has firmly committed to keeping it off.

How did he do it?

His key (and yours, and mine) was and is good old fashioned exercise and a brand new menu.

His new regimen is quite strict – in addition to the “no donuts” rule he made for himself (good call there), he has taken a huge step to lower his carbs to a maximum of 50-75 grams/day, a fat loss “sweet spot” for many who are looking to make a visible change in how they look quickly!

In addition to changing his diet, he has committed to exercise as well, and hits the gym 5-6 times per week for 30-60 minutes each session, depending on whether he lifts weights or not. (Sounds like Genesis, doesn’t it?)

But it was probably plastic surgery, or some miracle pill, right?

We read those rumors earlier this year, too. We had heard that thanks to his connections in Hollywood, he was taking a custom made nutritional supplement to curb his appetite. (Do we smell a cheater?!)
